A Road Network That Favors Public Transit
The paper articulates a variety of aspects of hierarchical structure suitable for application to transport networks. The paper first considers key attributes of transport modes relevant to network structure. It then identifies the structure of traditional road networks, articulating key structural attributes relating to transport modes, geographical scale, access distance and the topological property of ‘arteriality’. The paper then analyses conventional road hierarchy, and discusses ways in which this is not ideal for street networks oriented to public transport. To address this, the paper demonstrates a ‘transit-oriented’ hierarchy (TOH) that offers a way of structuring street networks that has the potential to promote ‘transit-orientation’ – orientation towards public transport together with its access modes.
